#Devotion Honesty There was a farmer and a baker who were long time friends and they did business together. The farmer would buy bread from the baker while the baker would buy butter from the farmer. One day the baker decided to weigh the butter to see if he was getting a kilogram and he found that he was not. This angered him and he took the farmer to court. The judge asked the farmer if he was using any measure. The farmer replied, “Your Honour, I am primitive. I dont have a proper measure, but I do have a scale. The judge asked, Then how do you weigh the butter? The farmer replied Your Honour, long before the baker started buying butter from me, I have been buying a kilo loaf of bread from him. Every day when the baker brings the bread, I put it on the scale and give him the same weight in butter. If anyone is to be blamed, it is the baker. Matthew 7:12 ESV “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. How honest are you? I have realized in my own life that many are the times I expect grace and understanding from others when I do something wrong, but it becomes a struggle to extend the same grace to others when they need it. Many are the times we expect favour to come out way but we don’t think about the person on the other end. Before you throw a tantrum about what has been handed over to you like the baker, ask yourself “How do things look on my end? Have I been faithful? Have I done the right thing?” As an employer as you giving fair wages for the work you require your employees to put in? On the other hand, as an employee, are you putting in a fair amount of work for the kind of wages you are being paid? Even as Christians sometimes we become dishonest about little things and it becomes a habit. If we continue along the same line, it becomes such a habit that we no longer can tell what the truth is any more. Like Austin OMalley said, “Those who think it is permissible to tell white lies soon grow colour-blind.” Practical Application Treat others with the same kind of respect, honour and honesty you expect them to dish out to you!
