Diabetes Mellitus is a growing concern for many cat owners today. While, most felines diagnosed with diabetes also tend to suffer from obesity, a healthy weight cat is also susceptible to it as well. The body is dependent on a normal level of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Think of insulin as the body’s sugar regulator. An imbalance occurs when the body is not producing enough insulin which can lead to loss of appetite, loss in weight, dehydration, vomiting, lethargy, coma and death. Typical symptoms are increased thirst and increased urination. Due to the high occurrence of diabetes seen in obese felines, it strongly recommended to maintain your cat at a healthy weight.
