Diary of a Chinchilla Wednesday - It is a sad day in the kingdom. This is not going to be an easy thing to write. I want you to imagine that you are one of us. Small. Caged. Defenseless. Dependent upon an incomprehensible Other for everything you need. You eat only when the Other feeds you. Your home is as big or small as the Other cares to make it. You might be loved. Or you might live in fear of what the Other will do to you today. You are not one of the lucky ones. You are often hungry. You are ill. Your other grumbles at your needs, your presence. And one day you are seized by a hand, taken in a confusing jumble of motion, and hurled through the air... Are your last moments to be crushed under the wheels of a car on a highway? Because your owner grows tired of the little they do to keep you (barely) alive? This is the death you must endure? Tossed from a speeding car? Not today. Today we can see Gods hand at work. Because a young woman, a veterinary technician no less, is driving along that same highway and sees you fly through the air. She manages to stop and rescue you from the divider. You are taken to an animal hospital, given medical care for the first time, and are going to live with the angel who rescued you. We need more happy endings. If you are reading Diary of a Chinchilla, you likely are one of the good ones. You would not mistreat a creature who depends upon you, be it a child, an animal, or hopefully anything in need that comes your way. Now comes the harder part. If you see someone abusing an animal, SAY SOMETHING. Report it. If you know the person, find a way to end the situation. Contact a shelter. Step in temporarily. Please - imagine yourself in that animals situation before you close your eyes and walk away. When a friend or family member announces they are getting a pet and you know they are not prepared, SAY SOMETHING. Gently suggest that they learn about that exotic animal before getting one. Remind them that the 19 year old employee at the national chain pet store is not the best resource for information. Try to convince them to visit a shelter. Or to wait until they are ready. Teach your children to be kind to animals. If they are going to have pets, YOU must be responsible. Do not tolerate teasing or cruel behavior. We depend on you for our very lives. And finally, here is our new friend Freeway. He is alive thanks to Dakota Tschinderle, and I am sure they will be having lots of adventures together as Freeway recovers. I have promised to teach him the Laser Stinkeye of Death technique. He will need it...Dakota has some big dogs he will need to boss around. Hugs and scritches, Freeway and Dakota.
