Diatribe incoming: What it comes down to is this, we cannot fear what might happen based on what we say. People are killed for their commentary. You have a right to disagree with what they say. This is fundamentally true. Murder is never the appropriate response. Nor is said murder representative of an entire culture. When a few individuals make an incredibly ill advised, hateful decision to end the lives of others, it transcends religious or ideological lines. The killings of innocents in Paris and beyond at the hand of extremists cannot be attributed to Islam. To do so is to perpetuate a potentially deadly and definitely poisonous misunderstanding of belief. We all stand apart and together. Extremists are not the norm. They do not represent anything but fear and hatred. Stand tall. Speak truth. Spread art. Be creative. I have worked as an educator and as a journalist. In both capacities, as well as my role as a human being, I am angry. I cant shake it. Its not just Paris, either. Its a continuous reminder of how often how world is absolutely terrible (lets not so quickly forget the race inequality throughout the United States consistently being represented by stories from Ferguson and beyond). I fear for my students. I fear for my friends and family. Not because of our potential downfalls...that can come at any time. The real worry is the possible embedded hatred for others that can come from repeated idiocy upon the world around us. Times like this, patience does not seem appropriate. The human race may feel like a failed experiment, and, depending on my mood, I might agree. Times like this I need to remind myself of the light among the darkness. Let us celebrate the beautiful people around us -- our friends and families who are there for us. I am furious. I cant understand that so many people died because of satire. Every one of us owes it to the world to keep our mouths open instead of shut. We cannot allow senseless murder to censor art or ideas. Ever.
