Dick and Nancy Byrd recently had quite a jolt !! WOW! 100,000,000 volts gets your attention. We had a lightening strike hit a tree next to our garage. It literally blew up a 70 foot tall hemlock that is over 2 feet diameter at the base, and it threw wood everywhere. I had a security light attached to that tree that goes on when the garage doors open. Of course, that was a wonderful copper path for a zillion amperes of current to surge into garage and the house. It blew both garage door openers and then followed the buried line I had installed to bring power to the garage and workshop shed. Inside the house, the spike popped about 6 breakers, including a 50 amp, 220 Volt breaker from sub-panel to the the main panel. Surprisingly, the power surge damage was minimal, although a printer and a laptop power supply were fried. The power surge damage would have been worse except for the fact that I have several Uninterrupted Power Supply systems on the computers and and the main plasma TV. HOWEVER, the big damage was from the voltage pulse induced in the Time-Warner cable. Literally, everything attached to the cable system is blown: The modem, wireless router, cordless telephone system, ethernet hubs and switches, the A/V receiver, and worst of all, the HDMI ports on the plasma TV. The computers are fine, but even that was a close call. My iMac is hardwired ethernet, but luckily the signal goes thru a E-Net switch before the cable reaches the iMac. Well, the switch blew, but that probably saved the iMac’s E-Net port. EVERYONE WAS OK !!
