Dictators generally hate saxophones. Far too rebellious and strongly associated with people of colour. Hitler forbade Jazz and depicted the saxophone as being an agent of the Negro and the Jew. The instrument had after all been invented by a Belgium anarchist. During the great terror of Stalin (1937 Russia), persistent saxophonists were imprisoned or shot. In 1937 Japan the lascivious evil sound of the saxophone was targeted as it had the impure stink of Jazz. In Communist Bulgaria you would be imprisoned for listening to or playing one. I guess the above are all great reasons to embrace this dangerous instrument.
