Did a UFO land in Georgia? Well, not exactly. Every Georgian can easily identify this regional landmark which is now considered historic. Recently reopened last year, and back in operation, this is Atlantas iconic symbol known as The Polaris. A revolving restaurant above the Hyatt Regency in Peachtree Plaza downtown. Its an iconic symbol of modern architecture in the 1960s. It was the brainchild of famed legendary Atlanta super mega architect John Portman. His revolutionary new idea and design known as the Open Atrium Tower set the standard for architectural skyscraper design and hotel designs for decades. Putting an open express elevator tower to a revolving restaurant at the top of an skyscraping open atrium was seen here as revolutionary. Portmans atrium hotel design in Atlanta was the first of its kind, and shocked everyone from laymen to engineers. It was so stunning and revolutionary that it caused one of the biggest buzzes in architectural history. Portmans atrium design has since been imitated around the world for years. The Polaris first opened in 1967, and is considered a historical structure based on its place in revolutionary architectural design history. Other revolving restaurants already existed during the same time, but the Polaris was considered unique and revolutionary. Now that it recently reopened, you and your family may once again experience a piece of Georgia magic!
