Did you ever wonder why I chose to work with seniors? I think - TopicsExpress

Did you ever wonder why I chose to work with seniors? I think everyone wants a job they love and not everyone is as lucky as I am. Most people have ‘garden variety’ jobs where they work 9 to 5. They tend to be people who sit at a desk and go home, rarely thinking about work after hours. I, on the other hand, rarely stop thinking about work. I think about the residents, their families, the staff, and even the pets in our community. I think about upcoming holidays and how to have more fun. I wonder what will be my costume for our next event. My friends find this odd while I find it an indelible part of who I am and what I do. So, why do I do this work? It is because I never stop being rewarded. The rewards aren’t usually tangible – it’s more about the hugs I get, the smiles on peoples’ faces when I dance or sing, or the sigh of relief in a family member’s voice when we help them with a problem. And when that happens, it’s a golden moment. Those are the moments I live for – those are my rewards. At the end of the day, when I lay my head down on my pillow at night, I need to know that at least one person’s day was just a little better for my efforts. I need to do this work like I need to breathe the air. And I need all of you in my life to share our joys, our sorrows and our silliness. And I thank God for being able to be here with you and do this work. It is always a blessing and my heart is full of gratitude.
