Did you know?.... At peak operation, roughly 120 airmen (and women) and their families lived up at Almaden Air Force Station on Mt. Umunhum during the Cold War. They worked hard to provide continuous 24x7 air surveillance and a blanket of protection for the residents of the SF and Monterey Bay Areas (and beyond)...searching the skies for airborne enemy threats. Typical station assignment length was anywhere from several months to several years.
