The course was an oval, flat course of 2 miles one furlong in circumference, but there was a slight hill as the horses entered the 4 furlong straight. Whyte records the October 1839 races as:- The Mostyn Stakes over the Mostyn Mile; The Champagne Stakes over 4 furlongs; The Pengwern Stakes over a mile and 6 furlongs; The St Winifred Stakes over a mile and a quarter; The Hokee Pokee Stakes; It was a prominent venue for race goers until the mid 1800s. A racehorse called pickpocket won a race at the course in 1831 and went on to win the Chester Cup in 1833. In 1846 Mostyn pulled off one of the greatest bargains in racing history when he bought the whole of Lord George Bentincks stud for £10,000. Some 40 horses, in training, brood mares and stallions were sent to Holywell, the other horses were sold for £7,000. The final meeting took place on 20th October 1852.
