Did you know?... "On August 1st, 1938 Alondra Park was acquired under the Mattoon Act at a cost of $1.014 million plus several thousand dollars for incidentals. The original petition for the acquisition of the park was circulated in the district, representing approximately $133 million. The incorporated areas within this district, namely Hawthorne, a portion of Inglewood, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa, Redondo and Torrance, exercised their prerogative as chartered cities and withdrew from the area. A second petition carried seven names and involved an area of approximately 17 square miles with a valuation of a fraction over $9 million and the Board of Supervisors acquired the property, granting the prayer of these petitioners. Property was not purchased for a Regional Park but as a District Park under the Mattoon Act. No provision was made for improvement, only the acquisition portion of the Mattoon Act being utilized."
