Did you know: The Conflict in the Congo is the deadliest since World War II and more than 6 million people have been killed. Congo has been described as the “Rape Capital of the World” and the “Most Dangerous Place in the World to be a Woman. This conflict is fueled by conflict minerals, minerals used in our electronics (cell phones, laptops, etc.) that are mined in the Congo. Armies and militia groups use rape and violence to force citizens of the Congo to work these mines for them and then consumerist countries like ours, use these minerals in our electronics, further perpetuating the violence. But there is something you can do. SAY NO TO CONFLICT MINERALS. refuse to buy from companies that do not disclose where their minerals come from and JOIN US FOR LOBBY DAY. leaving campus tomorrow at 1230! email myself at [email protected] or Prof. Tauriac at [email protected] to RSVP or with any questions! Hope to see there! If you wish to make a substantial contribution to peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo, join Congo Action Now (CAN), Boston for Congo (BFC), and other caring citizens of the world when we meet with our state government to ensure our taxes do not fuel conflict in the Congo (youre welcome even if not a citizen or pay your taxes in a different state!). No experience in advocacy? No worries! We will be holding a quick training on the bill we seek to pass (H.2898) and lobbying 101 before brief meetings with legislative offices. Your attendance makes a big impact on the elected officials we visit!
