Did you know that kitchen benchtops are dirtiest surface in most homes? You may be surprised, but think about all the food and drink spills, shopping bags, handbags and even bottoms your benchtop is in contact with regularly and it is no surprise it comes out on top. Why is it so important that benchtops are clean, you ask? Well if you do all your food preparation on your benches like most people you will often have food coming into direct contact with the bench. Last night’s chicken residue doesn’t taste so good on the kids sandwiches in the morning and could even make them ill! So follow these better benchtop wiping practices to protect both the look of your benchtop surfaces and the health of your family: Wipe your benchtops both before and after preparing any food. That way you will have the peace of mind knowing they are clean, rather than wondering. If you see a spill, wipe it up right away to avoid staining your benchtop. This is particularly important for acidic items like wine or juice, which can quickly stain granite benchtops in particular. A highly absorbent sponge will make easy work of big spills. Don’t allow your kitchen sponge or cloth to become a breeding ground that then spreads germs rather than containing them – get a multi pack rather than a single cloth so you don’t have to worry about having spares on hand. A good tip is to zap your damp sponges in the microwave for 2 minutes daily or as needed (be careful they will be really hot!). This will nuke all the germs it has picked up that day. Remember you can also apply these tips to sponges used in the bathroom and laundry. What are your tips for keeping your benchtops healthy and safe?
