Did you know that the number of adjustments that the user can make on the Heavy Duty Ball Winder is four? #1 Angle of the Tensioner Post arm #2 Position of the Post on the arm (in the slot) #3 Angle of the curly q on the Post #4 O-ring tension at the base of the spindle (black rubber) Although over time and use, things start to settle in as the ball winder winds miles of yarn, but generally, the first 3 items should not need too much adjustment. The O-ring, however, will get tighter or looser, as it is the main interface between all of the components much like tires on your car are the interface between your car and the road. So item 4 is what you will adjust the most (if at all). Lastly, the gears inside the ball winder accumulate fiber that have gotten inside the wooden housing. Hard to believe, I know, but over time these fibers will eventually need to be removed or they will cause wonky balls and other issues (slowness, rough turning of handle, etc.). They are the cholesterol of the ball winder. If not addressed, these fibers will cause the ball winder to not work properly. Fortunately, all of these items are user addressable! We even have detailed videos on our youtube/nancysknitknacks channel (How to Clean the Heavy Duty Ball Winder and O-ring Adjustment 2). Oiling, which is minimal, is covered in the cleaning video. If you clean, oil, and adjust your ball winder it should last longer than any car you have ever owned! Note: O-ring needs to be replaced if visible signs of cracking occur.
