Did you know that there are 10 different kinds of killer whales in the world? Three have been seen in the San Juan Islands. Older publications lump all as one species, but newer sources already recognize the Biggs killer whales as unique. Biologists say that at least 6, if not all 10, will eventually be accepted as separate species. Physically, most are very similar, but their hunting methods, prey, language, culture, and social structure are very different. Each type has been genetically isolated from between 100,000 to 1,000,000 years. We humans are trying to catch up to what the whales have known for millennia! Here is an excellent poster that shows all 10 kinds of orca whales. https://swfsc.noaa.gov/uploadedImages/Divisions/PRD/Programs/Ecology/Killer%20Whale%20Poster%20-%20final.jpg?n=5417
