Did you know....that there were two MRC’s? The 1884 Rivers and Harbors Act established the Missouri River Commission. Much like the Mississippi River Commission, the members of the Missouri River Commission were appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the Senate, however, only five members comprised the Missouri River Commission—3 from the Corps of Engineers, including its president, and 2 civilians, only one of whom had to be a civil engineer. The duties of the Missouri River Commission were similar to that of the Mississippi River Commission in that it was responsible for executing plans for the improvement of navigation and commerce on the Missouri River from its mouth to its headwaters and was responsible for recommending and executing additional surveys and investigations. The Missouri River Commission was abolished by the 1902 Rivers and Harbors Act—18 years after its creation.
