Did you know the USS YORKTOWN is home to a few stories that are similar to Louis Zamperinis of the box office hit Unbroken? Here is one of them: Lt. James Pop Condit a pilot stationed on the USS YORKTOWN was shot over Marcus in 1943. He was then picked up and taken to a Japanese POW camp. After finally being released he was summoned to the battleship Missouri on Sept. 2 1945 to represent naval aviator POWs during the surrender ceremony. In our exhibit onboard the USS YORKTOWN you can see a letter he wrote while being detained. You can also see a sword he took while in the Japanese POW camp. Here are a few photos.
