Digital Capacity Building Course Thursday 24th October 2013. Manchester Town Hall Today, I was invited to an event about Digital Capacity Building organised by Tackling Hate Crime. The chairperson Vanessa Scarborough (DCLG Deputy Director, Head of tackling Hate Crime) spoke about the importance of empowering and strengthening community based organisation to have a positive contribution as well as tackling hate crime by having a presence in the digital world and social media such as facebook, twitter, youtube and the internet in general. The course was designed to give skills for those people to make it a reality. Then, Iftikhan Awan (independent member of anti Muslim Hate Crime Cross government departments Working group) emphasised the importance of social media and how the whole community and in particular Muslim community can contribute to have a voice in the social media in order to counter the negative publicity as well as the increase in Anti Muslim Hate Crime on individual and organisations such as Mosques. Then, Atif (film maker) showed the audience how to use simple techniques and equipments (Mobile, Ipod...) to make films and documentaries using for example Windows Movie Maker which are suitable to put on Facebook, youtube and other social media to spread the news regarding community events as well as exposing any hate crime committed against community members or organsiations. These publicities will be playing a big role in balancing negative main stream media.
