Digital Photos Of Documents In Archival Research What has your experience been with such research? Do you have a good table-top camera stand to recommend for such research? In doing some historical and genealogical research, I recently took a number of digital photos without flash of handwritten documents at an archives. I have a good, 7.1 megapixels digital camera which has taken some very sharp, good document pictures in the past. However, this time around, unfortunately, I found that the handwriting in a number of those photos was very hard, if not impossible, to read. As I discovered, when I checked those images out on my home computer: many of those pictures were not in good focus and a few of them even had double images. The first problem was, I assume, due to my taking those photos too far away from the text, given the macro setting I had set the camera on. The second problem was, I assume, due to my shaking the camera inadvertently, beyond what the camera’s anti-shake function [which I had on] could correct. At any rate, the overall result of that photo session was less than I had hoped for, though, it was a good learning experience. When I take digital photos of documents in archival research in the future: –I’ll be sure to have the camera closer to the text. In fact, I’ll ascertain for certain what the camera’s optimum range is when using it with the macro function for document photos. –I’m also looking into the possibility of purchasing an easy to use, table-top camera stand which will allow me to position the camera at the optimum distance from text and also minimize the possibility of camera shaking. Unfortunately, as good as my camera is, I’ve learned from the manufacturer that it was not designed to take a shutter release. One can, however, set the camera up with an internal timed shutter release–two seconds or ten seconds. QUESTION: As I asked at the beginning of this post, have you had experience with a good table-top camera stand, which you would recommend for such research? Thanks. ++++++
