Diplomats Training in Germany As a diplomat in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Humphrey participated in a diplomatic training course organised by the German Foreign Office in May and June. Germany has been offering these courses since 1992 to young diplomats from all over the world. The exchange is also meant to enhance dialogue between young African and German diplomats. We met with Humphrey after his return to Kenya to learn about his experiences in Germany: Q: What did you know about Germany before travelling there? H: I learned about Germany at University, about its political system and especially its history. Actually, I was already in Germany in 2003 on a DAAD scholarship in Freiburg. Q: Is there any cliché you found true or false about Germany? H: In Kenya, Germany is known for Oktoberfest and cosuming a lot of beer. I think this is partially true. Q:What did you like best? H: I admired the transport system which is so efficient in Germany. Germany is very clean and living there is affordable. Q: Would you recommend your young colleagues to do the seminar in Germany as well? H: Of course, the training was very good. I particularly liked the practical courses on public speaking and negotiation. Q: Did you also experience the enthusiasm about the World Cup in Germany? H: I was at a Public Viewing of Germany against Ghana. The atmosphere was very positive and friendly. Q: Would you like your next posting to be Berlin? H: Absolutely, that would be my first choice!
