Directors Whove Cast Their Daughters >>Clint Eastwood and Francesca Eastwood Clint Eastwood made his daughter’s day with a cameo in his new movie Jersey Boys (out Friday)which he directed: Daughter Francesca Eastwood plays a waitress who flirts with one of the band members. The role was dad’s idea. “We were at dinner and he was like, ‘Oh, I have a part you might be right for in my next picture,’” the actress told the New York Post. The 20-year-old recognized that working for her famous dad was not the typical on-set experience. “I guess a new actress wouldn’t be talking to him in between takes and making jokes and eating lunch together,” she said. >>Judd Apatow and Maude and Iris Apatow Director Judd Apatow took his family to work for his 2012 movie This Is 40, which stars Leslie Mann, who is Apatow’s real-life wife. The two girls who play Mann’s daughters are their real-life children, Maude and Iris. The three had played the same roles in Apatow’s earlier film, Knocked Up. Apatow told the New York Times that the girls are “not encouraged” to act in other people’s films and that he only shoots with his daughters during the summer. >>Francis Ford Coppola and Sofia Coppola Francis Ford Coppola’s daughter, Sofia, wasn’t supposed to be Mary Corleone in the 1990 movie The Godfather, Part III. Winona Ryder had accepted the part, but as the Guardian recounts, she had to pull out at the last minute. Julia Roberts backed out due to a scheduling conflict, and Madonna was deemed too old. So Sofia stepped up. The 18-year-old had little acting experience and was suddenly on tap to play a major movie role. In the end, critics skewered the performance, but Coppola the elder defended his daughter, saying, “I wanted her [Sofia] all along. I was fashioning Winona in her image.” >>John Huston and Anjelica Huston Anjelica Huston was just 16 when her father, John Huston, cast her in 1969’s A Walk with Love and Death. “I wasn’t crazy about the part,” she told the Guardian. The actress had had her eye on the Franco Zeffirelli film Romeo and Juliet. But Dad had other plans and wrote to Zeffirelli to tell him that his daughter would be cast in his own film. ”I was a big snob at the time,” Angelica Huston recalled. “I felt that the script was a bit saccharine. … And Dad wouldn’t let me wear makeup, which was seriously problematic. So the whole thing was a bit of a debacle.” >>Steven Spielberg and Jessica Capshaw With actress Kate Capshaw and director Steven Spielberg for parents, maybe it was inevitable that Jessica Capshaw would be drawn into show business. Capshaw interned with stepdad Spielberg on Schindler’s List and was cast by the director for a small part in Minority Report. The Grey’s Anatomy star says her connections only got her so far. I don’t remember at 19, someone giving me a golden key and saying, ‘Welcome to Hollywood. Which job would you like?’ she said. “I’ve always had to work hard for what I’ve got and to stay where I was.”
