Disable the distractions Luke 21:36 (ERV) Pray that you will be able to get through all these things that will happen and stand safe before the Son of Man. Meditation Jesus’ words in today’s verse were spoken to followers of Him, but it’s the context of his comments that’s unsettling. He’d just shared a parable about trees, and how as they sprout leaves, it means summer is near. It’s an obvious sign of the times that shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. Then Christ elaborates: “Be careful not to spend your time having parties and getting drunk or worrying about this life. If you do that, you won’t be able to think straight, and the end might come when you are not ready. It will come as a surprise to everyone on earth. So be ready all the time.” (Luke 21:34-36 ERV). Does that passage speak directly to you and your behavior? Be honest. Giving your time to mindless entertainment, or being overcome with anxiety, is anything but uncommon. Yet as a Christian, you’re not to let your life be ruled by these distractions. You’ll strengthen your relationship with the Lord—and empower your faith—as you set aside the things that pull you away from His trust. Discipline your life, and learn to stand safe in His presence. Prayer God, identify specifically behaviors or attitudes in my life that dissatisfy You. Speak to me about them, and give me wisdom on how to seek You instead of them. Amen.
