Disarm and disable; the anti-gunner’s ultimate goal Comment2 August 11, 2013 Anti-gun Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) ignited a firestorm the other day that continues this weekend; an attempt—according to his critics, as suggested yesterday by the popular No Lawyers – Only Guns and Money blog—to intimidate supporters of Stand Your Ground laws. Maybe not-so-coincidentally, Friday saw a nasty reaction to the so-called “Starbucks Appreciation Day” promoted mainly by some Open Carry activists, though as this column noted, Saturday seemed to be the day for coffee drinking armed citizens in the Seattle area. No Lawyers author John Richardson described Durbin’s efforts against SYG laws as a “political jihad.” Durbin sent a letter to a lot of non-profit groups inquiring about any associations with the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), and the Daily Caller says Durbin’s “interest in ALEC is based on the stand your ground legislation hat has become a focal point for liberal activists and lawmakers after the George Zimmerman trial in Florida.” Sen. Ted Cruz is taking Durbin on, and Florida sheriffs are defending the SYG law in their state. Gun prohibitionists don’t like drinking coffee in the company of armed citizens, nor do they care for the notion of lawful self-defense. This begs the question, what do they like? They are big on background checks. They like pretending that they are doing something important about violent crime, as may be best epitomized by Durbin’s plan to hold a hearing on SYG laws next month before his Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights. And they stick to the playbook, at least until it gets widespread exposure. The ultimate goal of gun prohibitionists is to disarm everybody. Working up to that, they push social bigotry and expect coffee shops to be their surrogates in that effort. When they get a headline for it, that seems like a big accomplishment. It doesn’t stop the killing in Chicago, didn’t prevent the multi-state manhunt for suspected killer James De Maggio that ended yesterday in his death and it won’t keep someone from invading your neighbor’s home, or yours. But it feels so good.
