The dog tags are those of 31-year-old Army infantryman Bernard Gavrin, a soldier from New York who was reported missing during the brutal battle of Saipan in 1944. According to Gavrins 81-year-old nephew, David Rogers of West Delray, Florida, the family never found out what happened. I am the only living relative to have known my Uncle Bernie, Rogers told The Sun-Sentinel.
