Discovery of long-lost World War II dog tags may solve the 70-year-old mystery of a soldiers death By DAILY MAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 23:26 EST, 20 April 2014 | UPDATED: 23:26 EST, 20 April 2014 The family of a U.S. soldier whose death has remained a mystery for 70 years are hoping a set of worn World War II dog tags found in a cave in the South Pacific will lead them to his remains. The dog tags are those of 31-year-old Army infantryman Bernard Gavrin, a soldier from New York who was reported missing during the brutal battle of Saipan in 1944. According to Gavrins 81-year-old nephew, David Rogers of West Delray, Florida, the family never found out what happened. I am the only living relative to have known my Uncle Bernie, Rogers told The Sun-Sentinel.
