Discussing breeds of dogs on another page, Im reminded of how much I liked my Chow Chow and her Chow/German Shepherd daughter. When they were young they exhibited an enormous amount of joie de vivre. When they first took up residence at my house, they took great delight in exploring the neighborhood - neighborhood being a very flexible concept in their minds. (A four-foot high fence was no obstacle. The shorter Chow would dig under the fence and the bigger, more athletic dog would climb the fence.) I would initially be mad as I drove around, worried, looking for the two explorers but it was difficult to sternly admonish them when I finally found them. They would race back, panting excitedly. They had obviously had a splendid time and my concerns were not their problem. (Unlike many dogs who will return after a foray beyond the yard with body language indicating guilt and regret, such concepts were beyond their comprehension.) Ive been to a couple of homes recently where the dogs at both places bark and yelp and grovel and demand attention. My father has a Yorkie who will (no exaggeration) bark in indignation if she does not receive attention. Such behavior is beneath the dignity of a Chow. It is rare to find a cat who is more cool, aloof and dignified around humans than a Chow. As you will find in nearly all breeds of cats, Chows also have a stubborn streak. (Not a mean streak - it is simply that they are only inclined to go along with a human if their desires happen to correspond with what the human wants at that moment.) As with children, discipline is necessary for dogs (unless they are so small they can fit into a shoe box) but what my Chows taught me is that I did not need to speak harshly to them in order to get their attention. Oddly enough, a sweet tone of voice would often do just as well. All in all, a good breed if the dog receives proper attention and has sufficient space.
