Discussion Needed: I received a message from a concerned early learning educator who has students out in the world doing practicums. Heres her message--slightly edited for length, clarity, and anonymity: I know that many students will not challenge bad practice as they do not want to fail or UPSET the host center. Recently I have been listening to some students who have witnessed things that are definitely bad practice. I personally do not know the names of the centers. For example, one centre puts soap on childrens hands and make them suck it off if they swear. How can we encourage students to speak up, name, and shame? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. I am sure I am not the only ECE teacher who hears stories from students. Thoughts? How should early learning students respond when they see bad practice out in the real world?
