Dissecting the stride Part Four: putting the stride in perspective When it comes to sport skills, how you start a movement is everything. Your stride is the biggest movement of the pitching motion, it involves the entire body moving sideways, it occurs with only one leg on the ground, and it sets the tone for the rest of the motion. The stride either helps the remainder of the motion or it hurts it…it is never neutral. The most interesting feature of the stride is that it has to be powerful yet controlled and in balance; it has to be done in a way that encourages the ever important trunk and arms to move efficiently in the way they need to move. The legs and arms have an innate way they move together in sync…the stride should not interrupt or violate that abstract timing. If a stride is such that the upper body has to pull out of alignment in order to maintain some sense of balance, then the faulty stride is creating the next motion. If a stride is such that the delivery of the ball is compromised because of a mis-positioned lower body, then the stride forces the pitcher to accommodate the lower body motion instead of using it to enhance his delivery. A popular saying in life is “it’s not how you start it’s how you finish”; however, the pitching motion is an exception to this saying. “How you start will dictate your finish”…is a much more accurate perspective.
