Distinguished Old Boy of our Alma Mater, Professor T.Sunil Gamini Fonseka – B.Sc, M.Sc, Ph.D (U.K), Specialist in Microbiology. He obtained his B.Sc degree from University of Ceylon and M.Sc from University of Kelaniya. Professor Fonseka won a scholarship to U.K and obtained his Ph.D in Microbiology from Nottingham University. He was the first Vice-Chancellor appointed to the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka in 2005. Professor Fonseka has published more than 45 research articles in International/National refereed journals/ International/National Conferences or Symposia. Contribution to Teaching and Academic development in Rajarata University of Sri Lanka and Wayamba University of Sri Lanka. 1. Introduction of teaching modules in the Department of Food Science & Technology in an interim program under the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka in 1996-1997 to upgrade the Diploma offered by Affiliated University students of Wayamba to B.Sc in Agriculture with Food Technology specialization. 2. Commencement of B.Sc in Agricultural Science with Food Technology specialization at Rajarata University of Sri Lanka. 3. Serving as the Head of the Dept. of Food Science & Technology, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, from September 1996 – December 1998. 4. Functioned as the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture Sciences, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka from December 1998 – 2000 March. 5. First Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management (March 2000 – June 2001). 6. Planning and establishment of the Faculty of Livestock Fisheries and Nutrition of the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka. 7. Served as the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Livestock, Fisheries & Nutrition, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka from January 2001- February 2002. 8. Served as the Founder Dean of the Faculty of Livestock, Fisheries & Nutrition, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka from February 2002- December 2005. Thus serving as first Dean of two faculties of Wayamba University of Sri Lanka. 9. Played the leading role in the developing of BSc.(Food Science and Nutrition) four year degree programme under Wayamba University of Sri Lanka in 2000 10. Developing the curriculum of food related courses of the Faculty of Livestock, Fisheries and Nutrition 11. Functioned as a university teacher in the Department of Food Science and Technology for a period over 16 years 12. Served as the Acting Vice Chancellor of the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka in many occasions including from July 2003, January 2005 and March 2005 13. Vice-Chancellor, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka from 05.12.2005 to 31.12.2008. 14. Functioned as a resource person in the Staff Development Programme of the University. 15. Served as a member appointed by the Senates in the selection boards for appointment/promotion to Senior Professors, Professors, Senior Lecturers, and Probationary Lecturers etc. for different departments and faculties of the Rajarata and Wayamba Universities. 16. As the Dean of the Faculty of Livestock, Fisheries & Nutrition provided the leadership to prepare the initial and comprehensive proposal for improving relevance and quality of undergraduate education (IRQUE) in 2004. A new (revised) comprehensive proposal in again prepared and submitted in 2005 June. Contribution to National / International Development 1. Served as the National Consultant – Food Technology and Preservation Specialist for Knowledge Society Project (EKSP) (ADB Grant No. 0091 SRI (SL)) to prepare curriculum outline for technologist level program in food technology. this was on a project for Sri Lanka Institute for Advance Technological Education (SLIATE) (October 2009 to March 2010). 2. Served as a National Training Specialist for MFAR-FAO-SPAIN Post harvest fisheries project on minimum standards for fish handling and reduced post harvest losses in selected tsunami affected communities to develop a training manual to train the trainees of NIFNE (November 2009 to Jan 2009). 3. Design of an Insulated Ice Box for fish storage in boats, Insulated Box for fish storage at the landing sites. Funded by Connecting Regional Economies (USAID/ CORE), 2011 4. Member - Governing Board of the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency from 1997 to July 1999 and Sept 2012 to date 5. Was a Member - Council Member of the National Institute of Fisheries and Nautical Engineering nominated by the University Grants Commission from 2000 to 2002. 6. Served as a Member - National Science Foundation Working Committee on Agricultural Sciences and Forestry from January 2000 - June 2002. 7. Served as a Member of the Board of Study in Food Science and Technology of the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture, Peradeniya from 1997 to 2004. 8. Served as a Member of the Cashew Research Management Committee of the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka Cashew Corporation from 1998 - 2004. 9. Served as a Member - Council, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka from 1999 to 2008. 10. Served as a Member - Ministerial level Coordinating Committee for Development of Links among the Faculties of Agriculture, Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture and the Department of Agriculture and Export Agriculture in 2000 - 2001. 11. Served as a Member - Regional Technical Advisory Committee for Rice Research for the development of Links among the Faculty of Agriculture, Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture and the Department of Agriculture from June 2000 - 2002. 12. Was a Member - Regional Technical Advisory Committee for Export Agriculture for the development of Links among the Faculty of Agriculture, Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture and the Department of Agriculture from June 2000 - 2002. 13. Served as a Member - Regional Technical Advisory Committee for Horticulture Crop Research and Development for the establishment of Links among the Faculty of Agriculture, Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture and the Department of Agriculture from June 2000 - 2002. 14. Represented as a Member - Standing Committee on Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine & Animal Science in the UGC from January 1999 to June 2001 and again from 01st March 2002 to 2005.
