Diwali has turned into a festival of tragedies for many across Bengaluru as the hospitals continue to receive a number of cases pertaining to firecracker-related injuries. While Diwali is synonymous with the deafening sounds of bursting firecrackers, this concept is changing for many. Noise and smoke from the firecrackers are known to cause trauma to older people, infants and animals. There is increasing awareness about the pollution caused by the firecrackers and the sheer waste of money which is spent on firecrackers and is estimated at Rs 5,000 crore a year.
