Dmighty Breakfast......CHALLENGES OF URBAN SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN KAMPALA CITY Uganda is facing rapid urbanization and increasing population at a rate of 5.1%and 3.3% per annum respectively, leading to overcrowding and the development of slums and informal settlements with poor waste management practices 1. Hence, waste generation increases with increasing population growth2. Research has revealed that urban dwellers generally consume more resourcesthan rural dwellers, and so generate large quantities of solid waste and sewage. Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA)acknowledges that the amount of Solidwaste generated overwhelms the capacity of the Authority to collect and dispose given the fact that cost of SW collection is enormous7’5,6 . Out of 1,200–1,500 tones of garbage generated per day, only 400-500 tones are collected giving a collection efciency of only 40%. It is estimated that KCCA spends United States Dollars 1.53 million per month to remove only 30% of the total waste generated: JOIN THE DEBATE!
