Do Not Abuse the Youth in Political Positions! There is no doubt the youth in Malawi will play a decisive role in the forthcoming tripartite elections set for May 20. This is not only because they are in majority counting for over 65% of the total population, but also because they are the hardest hit by the slow pace of development. Additionally, the youth have become so critical and analytical to the extent that they can determine the outcome of the elections. Realising this fact, most of the political parties jumped quickly to embrace only the “AGE” component of the youth by appointing some young persons into critical political positions such presidential candidates and runningmates. The aim is to dangle the young figure as a carrot to attract the youth vote. This is a big contrast and jump from a scenario where youth have largely participated in politics as agents of violence and intimidation. The general expectation is that the youthful candidates would help push the “YOUTH AGENDA” into the policy dialogue as we prepare for a new government to be ushered in after the polls. But this is politics. The youthful aspirants were largely picked to catch the youth into some political bags. The choice may have also been influenced by regional and tribal considerations. But the youth of Malawi are now clever. Additionally, the youth may not vote as a block. If this may be the case, then it is too naive to think age will influence the youth to vote for a candidate that is youthful or has partnered with seniors. We do not expect that the youthful aspirants, elected or appointed, are to be ABUSED to help shoulder some POLITICAL BLUNDERS and SCANDALS of their respective parties. That could simply be “Political child Abuse”. The youth roped in into high political positions should not be used for public relations to waterpaint political bruises. They should not be used to CASTIGATE or DEMONISE other political parties or aspirants. They should not be weighed down by political burdens which have the potential to cut off their political future. If that happens, it will weaken the youth agenda of encouraging youth representation in decision and policy making processes. ADVICE TO YOUNG ASPIRANTS! Congratulations for the posts. But be focused and determined to push a clear agenda. MUSALOWELERE zaeni. Do not allow to be used as political mouthpieces of hate speeches. You may NOT MAKE IT on May 20 but this participation will provide lessons for future use. Your agenda is not to demonise and castigate others, remain focused on issues otherwise the youth of Malawi are not looking for youthful leaders, they are looking for change. If you portray the picture you are unstable and immature, the youth will simply ignore you and accuse you of pushing agendas of “SENIOR POLITICIANS” who have backed you all the way or simply handpicked you for the post based on sinister motives. You have a life to live after elections and never attempt to plant and grow hatred against others just because you want your master to win the elections. Be patriotic and push the agenda soberly. Leave everything to the voters and never fight other people’s battles. Remember, youth is not only age, it is a concept that can be understood and be appreciated by all ages. The Independence leaders in Africa were most over 50 years of age but they invested in future generations in a very amazing way. Take it from there and do not miss the point Keep well.
