Do You Remember NDA Government – The Blunder? After 51 - TopicsExpress

Do You Remember NDA Government – The Blunder? After 51 years of Independence, in 1998, National Democratic Alliance (NDA) headed by Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) got the chance to form government at the Centre. They tried hard to reach the magical number of 272 and in the due process formed a mammoth coalition. Their complete tenure till 2004 was full of failures and was a sort of “dark ages” for the country. Now when they indulge in development oriented talks and give ideas to fight corruption, I can’t stop laughing at their hypocrisy. Let’s dig deeper into it and ascertain the reason for my amusement: 1) Kargil War (May-July 1999) – Former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee was busy hugging Pakistan’s Prime Minister Mr. Nawaz Sharif when all the planning for the intrusion was already done and probably the execution had begun. It is said, “If a Manager is not good, his team will not deliver”. Was this the case that intelligence and everything failed and the situation escalated to the highest level i.e. war? 2) Coffin Scam – We lost 527 brave soldiers to regain the control of occupied territory. But the shameless government’s notoriety didn’t stop at that point. They found a novel way to earn money by fudging the coffin purchase deal. Comptroller and Auditor General of India’s report had found several frauds in the transaction of coffins. The caskets were purchased from Buitron and Baiza, a company based in United States of America rendering funeral services. The government had purchased 500 caskets worth 2500 dollars each which was presumed to be thirteen times the original amount. So, now when BJP talks of patriotism I have a very weird feeling for them. 3) Kandhar Hijack (December 1999) – IC 814 was hijacked by Pakistan based terrorist group and finally taken to Kandhar, Afghanistan. The hijacking lasted for seven days and ended after India released three militants who have till date executed many other terrorist activities in India. This tells us how weak the NDA government was. 4) Irresponsible Statement by Dy. PM – This was a complete shocker. Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, Shri L K Advani said that he was unaware of terrorists being released and accompanied by External Affairs Minister. Can this be possible? 5) Operation West End (2001) – Remember Tehelka? Several defense officials, politicians and BJP’s party President were caught selling their integrity, honesty and patriotism for some cash and gold chains. The sting operation made the real face of these corrupt people public. 6) Invitation to Pervez Musharraf for Peace Talks (July 2001) – BJP, presently in the opposition, give “big” (often baseless) statements on the functioning of government and its behaviour towards Pakistan. They say it is unethical if we talk to them. Where was their ethics when they invited the main culprit of Kargil war for talks in Agra that ultimately failed? 7) Terrorist Attack on Parliament (December 2001) – Nothing could have gone worse if any law maker had passed away in this attack. In a direct attack on Indian democracy, Pakistan based terrorist groups shamed the Indian government globally. The attack proved that Indian government was the weakest till date and had failed miserably on all the fronts. 8) Corruption in Allocation of Petrol Pumps & Gas Agencies (2002) – This was even worse. Mr. Ram Naik was the Petroleum Minister and was accused of practicing nepotism. Families of Kargil martyrs were running from pillar to post to get what was their right but the ministry turned a blind eye to all these things and allocated the resources to their relatives, friends and known ones. 9) Gujarat Riots (2002) – Only this blot was remaining on the government’s tenure but finally it happened. Ex-MP was burnt alive in this pogrom let alone what happened with the masses. Not only did the government failed to control it rather they used it to create polarization and consolidate votes in their favour. In all, the NDA government from 1998 to 2004 proved how incapable, irresponsible, weak and corrupt a government could be. Everybody was busy in building their bank balance and the country was going down day by day. Has anything changed since then in BJP?
