Do local residents want to go to a proper cinema or a load of black boxes? The building now housing the Odeon cinema has stood since May 1929. It was originally designed by famous architect W E Trent and opened on 13 May 1929 as the Regent Theatre. It was renamed the Gaumont in 1949. The cinema became the Odeon in October 1986. Although there have been some changes, with more screens added and the original attractive domed roof removed in 1968, the 1969 Screen 1 still resembles the circular shape. The most important thing to note is that this BIG SCREEN was used for Supercinerama presentations and is the last of the original purpose-built Cinerama auditoriums in the UK. With its large deeply curved screen, pleated curtains and original frontage, it is an asset to the town which is historically irreplacable. Bournemouth is becoming like a mini London but at least many of the stylish historic buildings in London are treated with respect and are given a place in modern society. If the cinema is removed from the existing building, the ABC will follow suit. The ABC is also much loved by local people and the building has a rich history attached. Planning permission has been granted for a multiplex to be built in Exeter Rd.
