Do we really have a free press in this country? Not anymore. Just try writing a story the elite don’t want published and see how far you get with it in the mainstream or as I like to call them, the Lame Stream media. It was realized early on by TPTB that a free press would be their enemy. So, rather than fight them or hope to hide their illegal dealings from them, it was much smarter just to own them. In 1934 Congress decided that the media would become a ‘for profit’ entity. Advertisers jumped on that like a goose on a June bug. But if broadcasting the news in papers, on radio and eventually TV was going to be, there’s no other name for it, ‘For Sale’ then the government would have to see to it that regulations were in place to prevent monopolies. Now, why does that fail to assure me that our ‘free’ press would be safe guarded from corruption? The problem with that is the way our government operates. Money runs campaigns and they create money sources that need to be rewarded with either positions of influence or legislation in their favor. Other ways that politicians reward corporations that are already unbelievably wealthy is making sure those pesky regulations are removed. Also by giving tax breaks and looking the other way when these corporations are involved in shady deals and takeovers. Rest assured that corporations are getting what they want or they would withhold their campaign dollars and, in the case of the giant owned media, withhold air time for political campaigns. Where once companies were punished for trying to create monopolies (It’s a cute term for price fixing) now companies can merge freely. Don’t want to sell your innovative business to a huge conglomerate? Tough. We now have hostile takeovers. Those of us old enough to remember the break-up of Ma Bell just scratch our heads in wonder over that one. You can own a company that is doing fairly well and if another company/corporation wants to buy you out, they can do it and you have no recourse? Don’t bother writing to tell me that it doesn’t happen. I’ve seen it happen way too many times. I’m still trying to wrap my head around it. Somehow it doesn’t seem American. When corporations own newspapers, radio, TV and publishing companies, their focus is first, last and always on profit. They are not interested in telling the American people the clear, unvarnished news and allowing them to decide how to think or what to believe. It might affect their bottom line. Our Founding Fathers intended for newspapers to be privately owned and free from government interference. In Dante’s words, “Give Light and the people will find their own way.” Our Bill of Rights states that “Congress shall make no law…prohibiting the free exercise of speech or the press”, and thereby guaranteeing that “An act for the punishment of certain crimes against the United States”, which does abridge the freedom of the press is not law, but is altogether void and of no force.” What is the Cabal to do if Congress can’t inhibit the freedom of the press? They don’t want their nefarious business practices exposed. They certainly don’t want their prostitution of Congress exposed to the public. Well, one legal way to control the media and therefore public opinion, is to own them. And since publishing a newspaper isn’t cheap, let business support their efforts by buying advertising space in those same papers. This became such an incestuous relationship that it was regulated until the Reagan presidency. After that, if a newspaper, radio or TV station wanted to run an expose’ on a particular company’s business practices, they’d better make sure first that they weren’t shooting themselves in the foot. That company might be one of their top sponsors. Our Constitution and Bill of Rights restrains the moneyed elite from repressing free speech and the freedom of the press. So the way to control the press is to control the purse strings. It has worked too well. The vast majority of newspapers, publishing companies, and radio and TV stations are now owned and controlled by six mega corporations.
