Do you always reap what you sow? In 2 Corinthians 9:6, the Bible says, “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.” But is this always the case? In Northern India, we are teaching farmers how to grow more rice with less seed. How is this possible? The answer is we teach them the System of Rice Intensification. By planting rice intentionally, leaving each sapling enough space to grow big and healthy, farmers are able to reap almost twice as much rice. But doesnt this contradict the Bible? No, and here’s why. When we teach farmers how to sow their rice, we teach them to sow with generous amounts of space for the plant to thrive. We want them to allow the plant to have enough resources available in the soil so that it doesnt have to compete with surrounding plants. Sowing seeds is an intentional action. Tossing seed on the ground will get you results, but sowing seeds carefully will drive results. The farmer in India who adopted this technique now grows 50% more rice and uses less than half the amount of seeds than he used to. 2 Corinthians speaks about sowing as a metaphor for our generosity. Let’s remember to include intentional acts of kindness in our giving so that we can also drive results. Please consider being intentional with your gifts by becoming a monthly contributor.
