Do you have an older horse you are taking care of? Here is some information we were asked to pass on from one of our supporters about older horses. If you have any tips to share please do share them! My mare was diagnosed with Cushings in 2010 and takes a daily Pergolide pill to treat it (I use Valley Vet). Now that there is a more reliable blood test (versus old Dex suppression test), more and more horses of various breeds are being diagnosed when it used to be attributed to getting older. Watch for signs like weight gain, trouble regulating heat, excessive water consumption, excessive peeing, hoof soreness, heavy/shaggy coat that doesn’t want to shed in spring, etc. Soli shed much better this spring, but we still body clipped her in April to help her deal with the heat. Another wonderful product that was a lifesaver for her when she was diagnosed with Cushings and had associated sore rear hooves. I highly recommend Easy boot Hoof Gloves if you ever have that issue. They are the best design I’ve ever found and are great for turnout. – Their half boot/gaiter design makes them easy on and off and doesn’t turn the hoof to mush with sweat/water build up like full boots do. I kept them on for daily turnout and pulled them off at night in her stall to allow the hoof to fully dry. One day, she was ouchy while the farrier and vet were working on her. I interrupted to put gloves on the hooves the farrier wasn’t trimming at the moment and she immediately settled down. The vet was amazed and had his receptionist call me later that day for information on them and has referred several clients to them. She wears different sizes front and back, so I ordered different colored adjustable strips to keep them separated.
