See below: Module I: Abacus design and use Integrative: Engineering, Math, History, Art, Latin Objective and Summary: Abacus will be a 10 bead model (Russian rather than Roman) to assist in learning place value, roman numerals, addition, subtraction, mult, div facts. Students will also have to carefully follow directions and use their fine motor skills. Aside from being a tactile tool, the abacus is color-coded and labeled with Roman numerals. Here is the most common DIY 10 bead Abacus: https://youtube/watch?v=HqHcWBa4b9A Module II: The Roman Market Integrative: STEM subjects: Engineering, Math, History, Latin Prerequisites: Module I completion, Latin Daily Life - at the market study, Roman numerals, libra and denarius as dollars and cents, Latin counting Materials: Abacus, Items from around the home: foods (perishables and non-perishables), pens, clothing, dishes, latin vocabulary labels for shop items and prices, play money, reuseable shopping bags Week 1: On paper, students will arrange the layout of a market using knowledge from study, art, and an outing to local outdoor market. Week 2: Students will use computer label maker to create labels appropriate to their market and prices. Next, create their shopping list with columns for items for purchase, quantity purchased, and total cost. Week 3: Shopping day! Students will arrange their learning space as their market and label the items appropriately. Armed with their list and abacus, and money will shop according to their list and use their using their abacus to total their individual and final costs. Shopping trip will complete with purchase of snack treat and drink (cupcake or other item and juice or water).
