Do you hear from roofing contractors that with their product they can go right over the old shingles, saving you from a messy and expensive tear off of the old roof system? Dont allow yourself to be convinced that this is a good idea. The old roof system needs to be completely removed. These pictures are a good reason why. Had someone just gone over with a new roofing product, this would never have been detected. Scary!!! As for messy tear offs, we pride ourselves on the clean up of every job we do, leaving your lawn just they way we found if not better. Maybe its the added expense that concerns you about tearing off the old roof system. If leaks like this go undetected the integrity of your new roof will be compromised and it will have to be addressed. Hiring a professional to do a job right the first time, is certainly cheaper then hiring someone unqualified where you will either have to have them redo their work or hire someone else to fix it. Over 50% of the roofs we tear off require some sort of work due to a leak or failed building components. Dont gamble with your roof.
