Do you know Q.What is a CIWS ? A close-in weapon system (CIWS), is a point-defense weapon for detecting and destroying short-range incoming missiles and enemy aircraft which have penetrated the outer defenses. Q.Type Of CIWS? Gun systems : A gun-based CIWS usually consists of a combination of radars, computers, and multiple-barrel rapid-fire medium-calibre guns placed on a rotating gun mount. Limitations of gun systems *Short range *Limited kill probability *Guns can only fire at one target at a time Missile systems :A missile based CIWS relies on infra-red, passive radar/ESM or semi-active radar terminal guidance, or a combination of these. This is particularly useful since most long-range anti-ship missiles use radar to home in on their targets.Missile systems have greater range compared to gun systems. Limitations of Missile systems *Low number of immediately available projectiles * Longer reload cycles * Higher costs per shot Since both system have there advantages and disadvantages larger military vessels are often protected by combinations of both systems. Some Examples: *Phalanx CIWS(Gun system, Consisting of a radar-guided 20 mm (0.79 in) Gatling gun mounted on a swiveling base) *Barak 1(Missile system,The launcher of Barak SAM system utilizes a compact vertical launching system, with an 8-cell module. ) *Kashtan CIWS (uses both gun system and missile system, typically equipped with two GSh-30K (AO-18K) six-barrel 30 mm rotary cannons, fed by a link-less feeding mechanism, and two 9M311 launchers equipped with 4 ready-to-fire missiles each and fed by a reloading system storing 32 missiles in ready-to-launch containers.) #RT90
