Do you know that Singapore and Japan Singapore share one common feature of having the most developed cities in Asia? There is also a resemblance in form between the public housing in Japan and the HDB in Singapore. To cultivate better urban planning and also conservation, a project is initiated by the Japan Foundation to allow architectural undergraduates from both countries to learn about traditional buildings such as the unique Singapore Shop House and the historical Kyo-Machiya in Kyoto Japan. As of now, 6 undergraduates from National University of Singapore (NUS) are conducting research in Kyoto with guidance from Kyoto Institute of Technology, Kansai University and Nara Womens University, followed by 2 weeks of internship at well known architectural firms Nikken Sekkei Ltd, NTT Facilities Inc, and Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei Inc. In August, it will the Japanese undergraduates turn to visit Singapore and conduct their research on the Singapore’s Shop Houses. The results of this project together with an exhibition will be presented at JCC in September. We will bring you more updates on this project in time to come. Do stay tune and we hope to see you at the exhibition!
