Do you know what the fearsome fellow in this photo has to do with the National Air and Space Museum? What you are looking is the head of a 50-foot Chinese Dragon Kite. This kite was part of the group of kites that was acquired from the Chinese Imperial Commission during the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. These kites were among the first aviation artifacts collected by the Smithsonian Institution. Due to its fragility it is not on display. However, if you come to the Museum in Washington, DC on Saturday, March 22 from 10 am – 3 pm EDT you can find out more about this and other kites at the Kites of Asia family day: bit.ly/1ouflUT.
