Do you remember Loving v. IRS? It didnt hold up in court for the the IRS to regulate tax preparers. The RTRP program is now defunct. The IRS rises again with a voluntary program for unenrolled preparers to get a certification. This really has tax pro organizations upset. I didnt really understand why until I read an article in the EA Journal. The amount of CEU is low, the test given is a 50-question test with no verification or standards and yet, the person who does this voluntary program would be listed as though s/he was a credentialed, verified tax pro. People who get this voluntary IRS credential may or may not be worth a darn. The credential would mean nothing and would prove nothing. The AICPA is now suing the IRS in federal court over it. The IRS, if it loses, will have to return to its corner bloodied and bruised like an overmatched boxer. Then, perhaps, they would get out of the ring altogether. Dont play their game. Hire a credentialed, proven, tested and federally-authorized tax professional. Hire an EA. A credential you can count on.
