Do you remember monumental moments in your life? I do, I remember - TopicsExpress

Do you remember monumental moments in your life? I do, I remember the first salad I ever ate. Dont get me wrong, I knew salad.....at the Pearce house potato salad was a staple. We had foreign dishes like spaghetti and meat balls. Every sunday we had chicken. Every Thursday night we had hamburgers. We regularly had peas, potatoes, beans, rutabagers, turnip greens, squash, onions, corn, collards, radishes, and so much more. But none of that prepared me for the hot summer night in June of 1964. Jack Cook, Erroll Easterling and I had agreed earlier in the day to meet after our dates to meet at the Nifty Coffee Shop in downtown West Point. Im pretty sure that the purpose of our meeting was to swap lies about our conquests but I can swear I was the biggest liar there if I opened my mouth. I not sure, but I believe that this night was also the first time I had ever been in a cafe, the first time I ever knew the meaning of the word menu. Deciding it was best to follow the knowledge of Barney Fife I ordered what the others ordered. Hamburger steak, french fries and a salad. Never had a hamburger steak before but having a hamburger I felt pretty safe. Had french fries too. But, what the hell was a salad? When the waitress showed up with three bowls, saltines, and a thing containing three liquid things, two orange and one white I was at a loss as to what to do. Watching the two others smear the stuff on the stuff in the bowl, I followed suit. Little did I know I made the politically incorrect choice by choosing Russian dressing or that, that green stuff was lettuce. Ive grown in wisdom, Im a man of the world, to be pretty honest Im pretty damned suave. I now order Ranch dressing on that green stuff.
