Do you wonder where the money goes when you support something like Diamonds in the Ruff or any other ASDR fundraiser? Well, the VAST majority of Atlantic Small Dog Rescue’s money goes towards veterinary costs. Take Buddy for example. He has just arrived so first of all he’ll get a wellness check and his shots. Then he’ll be neutered. Whoa, does he need dental work? He’s a puppy and he’s not a tiny guy so maybe not. But if he were an elderly Chihuahua, he probably would need not only a complete cleaning but most likely some extractions as well which can get costly. (Brush your small dog’s teeth, it makes a HUGE difference!) Speaking of small dogs, ASDR often has to pay for luxating patella surgery for these little guys which costs $500 to $1000 a leg and we know most dogs have four of them. Luxating patellae are knee caps that just won’t stay in place – “ouch!” A lot of dogs arrive with serious health issues - maybe you’ve read about Joey, the little Yorkie with the neck problem who required expensive delicate surgery. Any other medical concerns are also taken care of – mange, broken bones, malnutrition, body sores, parasites just to name a few. And of course, the dogs are cleaned up as many arrive with matted filthy fur. So that’s where the money goes, with a very small amount going toward promotional items like pamphlets, business cards, lapel pins and things to support fundraisers like stock for the calendars and ASDR’s upcoming cookbooks. Local pet food stores generously donate food for the dogs and volunteers pay for their own gas when transporting. And one last thing, the dogs are all microchipped!
