Dockwalk The Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) has agreed to allow twin cabins for non-officers aboard LY3 commercial yachts between 3,000 and 5,000 GT, The Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss) announced today. LY3 includes the substantially equivalent Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC) regulations established for large yachts. “It is clear from our studies that large-yacht crewmembers would not benefit from the application of this single cabin rule in our sector of the industry,” SYBAss technical director Chris van Hooren said in the statement. “To reduce the considerable economic impact of single cabins, yacht designers would likely opt for minimum MLC-standard cabins. On board yachts over 3,000 GT, such cabins would have awkward dimensions with recessed bunks and no ensuite sanitary facilities. This would actually lead to crew having lower standards of comfort than is currently the case on superyachts.” SYBAss lobbied the MCA on behalf of its members to get a substantially equivalent twin cabin option for LY3 yachts over 3,000 GT — to meet the standard, the proposed equivalent option must meet minimum size constraints and have an ensuite head. The substantially equivalent option will now be included within the UK’s MLC implementation package. sybass.org
