Doctor Leona says: 64% of overall patients in Vanuatu are from the North. TORBA. MALAMPA PENAMA & SANMA. It was revealed during Abwatuntora Theatre Fundraising in Port Vila yesterday that 64% of the overall patients in Vanuatu are from the Provinces and Islands in Northern Vanuatu. Speaking to the crowd at the Sea Front stage yesterday at midday, Doctor Richard Leona, who is Chief Surgeon Vanuatu revealed that the highest percentage of patients throughout the whole country come from the Northern Provinces and Island of Vanuatu including TORBA,PENAMA,SANMA and part of MALAMPA. “This figure is quite alarming and something has got to be done to reduce it because in the end many out of that percentage would seek further or better treatment here in Port Vila apart from the Luganville hospital in Santo. “Without good and adequate health human resources and facilities, there will be no good education and no healthy wealthy Vanuatu. Health begins at home and then in the community and covers the whole nation. It is not a government business but everyone’s business. It is also the reason why the Chiefs and the Churches have to be united with the National Government to involve with health issues and take the ownership of health services,” says Vanuatu Chief Surgeon Doctor Richard Leona, Doctor Leona said as the population growth rate continues to climb, the government, the Chiefs and the Church Leaders must prepare to unit and work together so as to avoid such issues as land and access to suitable sites for health clinics and hospitals to avoid delays in stepping up health projects and schemes that people need first and foremost even before education. “Good health begins with a baby in a mother’s womb even before it is born. And after birth, a child continues to require good health well before he or she begins education and continues to require good health all the days of his or her life,” Doctor Richard Leona strongly emphasized. “It is quite a stagnant figure when you come to think of it that 64% of the patients since independence up to now come from the northern region of Vanuatu and this is one of the very reasons that we must strengthen the medical facilities in the North of Vanuatu and need more doctors in the North for this very reason. Therefore the need for the National Government, the Chiefs and the Church Leaders to work together in unity to advance projects in the medical fields in the Northern regions of Vanuatu” he said. wanem think blong yufala. credit: daily post
