‘Doctor Who’ Casts Peter Capaldi As The 12th Doctor And the new Doctor is…versatile British actor Peter Capaldi! The news was announced live Sunday during a half-hour special hosted by BBC television and radio personality Zoe Ball. Capaldi is a veteran actor who has appeared in acclaimed comedies like The Thick of It (his role garnered him several awards including a BAFTA for Best Actor in a Comedy), as well as dramas including Torchwood: Children of Earth, The Hour and a previous appearance on Doctor Who in season four’s “The Fires of Pompeii.” He’ll also be seen in BBC America’s upcoming adaptation of The Musketeers. His casting marks a return to an older skewing Doctor; previous Doctor Matt Smith was a near unknown at the age of 26 when he was cast in the iconic role. “It’s an incendiary combination: one of the most talented actors of his generation is about to play the best part on television,” said head writer and executive producer Steven Moffat. “Peter Capaldi is in the TARDIS!” Additionally, Capaldi is also talented behind the scenes as a writer and director. In 1995, he won the Oscar for Best Short Film (Live Action) for Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life, and he has also appeared in many stage plays. This year has been particularly big for his career as Capaldi has appeared in World War Z and season two of The Hour, with two more films on the horizon (Disney’s Maleficent and The Fifth Estate). The lifelong Doctor Who fan is surely most excited about taking over the reigns of the TARDIS though. “Being asked to play The Doctor is an amazing privilege,” Capaldi said in a release. “Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can’t wait to get started.”
