Doctors, hospitals and clinics, and even insurance companies are earning millions of dollars from unnecessary surgical procedures. Topping the list of needless surgeries in the US is coronary bypass for men and hysterectomies and C-Sections for women. Set this against the backdrop of a population that is growing increasingly unhealthy and the fears associated with health, and the medical fraternity has a fertile hunting ground to play predator. Add to this the aggressive marketing of these surgeries and you’ve got a desperate section of the population, many gullible and ill-informed, who are willing to shell out an average $30,000 to get their internal organs badly messed up. And that amount is minus post-op treatment and possible ‘remedial’ surgeries. Internet advertising and private clinics use publicity material that liberally uses Hollywood actors as ‘model patients’ of weight-loss surgery, thus turning a barbaric practice into something that sounds even desirable.
