Documentaries about life and living conditions once a major part - TopicsExpress

Documentaries about life and living conditions once a major part of mainstream television have all but disappeared to minor sky channels and instead our youngsters are fed a constant diet of TOWIE, Big Brother,BGT and Pop Idol. Those documentaries that do make it on mainstream Television have for the last few years focussed on “Easy benefit living”, Benefits Street, Saints and Scroungers, How to get a council house, On benefits and proud etc etc. History taught in schools is limited to Vikings and Romans with no mention anywhere of the 1000 years since, serfdom, Slave labour, poverty, disease, workhouses and slums housing etc. Nor anywhere is it taught about the benefits the NHS, Welfare system, social housing and other social welfare programs have brought to this country. Not one person under 30 probably know that these services were introduced at a time this country was far more financially unstable than it is today and we were paying off debts as a percentage of GDP far in excess of those we have today and yet they all happened. Nor has it been mentioned to these youngsters that they are reaping the benefits of a healthy disease free lifestyle because we made these things happen regardless of the cost but rather in the interests of “social justice” Is it their fault this ignorance, or ours for allowing successive governments to remodel education to their political advantage ?
