Yes, cold conditions during the winter months will cause termites that are present outside your home to more or less hibernate, if they are nested deep within the soil or in decayed wood such as fallen trees. Large piles of firewood, however, as well as newspaper and magazine collections stored in outdoor sheds are also havens for termites. During winter months, these termite infestations remain active, waiting for the right environmental conditions such as warm, humid air to begin their mating cycles.
